Defence SMS

It is widely recognized worldwide in defence doctrine that operational and combat readiness is diminished due to the loss of any resource, be it personnel, equipment or capability, from any hazard or threat.

In light of the evolving needs, demands and challenges and following its principles of continuous improvement, armed forces around the world are constantly looking for ways to enhance the effectiveness of Force Protection by monitoring, assessing and adopting the lessons learned both from within and from others.

The primary goal of SMS, i.e. to proactively manage risk through a cycle of continuous improvement, positions this system as a very suitable tool to achieve the objective of defence doctrine.

The ISR team has experience in both SMS and military environments, which allows them to support the defence industry in the implementation of SMS.

Our experience includes:

  • The development of the Operational Environmental, Health and Safety Management System Manual for Task Force Commanders for the Department of National Defence/Canadian Forces (DND/CF).
  • Performance of a full review of the General Safety Program of the Air Force at the request of the DND/CF Air Force Safety Centre (AFS Ctr).
  • Development of the nuclear safety management system for the Canadian Department of National Defence, including:
    • SMS framework development (based on national and international models);
    • Regulatory gap analysis;
    • Management system gap analysis (users); and
    • Implementation planning, including performance objectives and measurement development approach.
