ISR develops methods and carries out analyses to characterize and evaluate safety issues, accident consequences and probabilistic risks associated with the operation of nuclear and radiological technologies.

In dispersion and health consequence analyses, ISR primarily uses COSYMA, an internationally recognized computer code designed for level III risk analyses, which incorporates complex dispersion and health impact models (acute and stochastic) based on international standards. ISR uses COSYMA as its tool of choice for the probabilistic calculation of deterministic and stochastic dose consequences. Most recently, ISR has completed a quantitative analysis of the probabilistic cost of accidents involving CANDU reactors for the Canadian regulatory organization. ISR has also worked with Eskom, the South African Regulator, to review the most recent Periodic Safety Review PRA and incorporate the results in a review of emergency planning zone requirements.
